The weather on Thursday evening was glorious in Cambridge and so we headed off to a nearby riverside pub and had a lovely evening dining al fresco (a rare treat here in the rainy UK). The sky was beautiful, puffy white clouds and a dipping sun that hung pregnant over the river.
On the drive home I noticed a rainbow high up in the clouds (even though there was no rain in sight… The scientists among you can explain that one to me!) I love rainbows and seeing this one made my heart glad. I love rainbows because to me they are a smile from our Heavenly father. They are a reminder of the covenant that God made with Noah in Genesis 9 and a reminder of the mercy that He still shows us…
Genesis 9:12-16. “12 And God said, “This is the sign of the covenant I am making between me and you and every living creature with you, a covenant for all generations to come: 13 I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth. 14 Whenever I bring clouds over the earth and the rainbow appears in the clouds, 15 I will remember my covenant between me and you and all living creatures of every kind. Never again will the waters become a flood to destroy all life. 16 Whenever the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and all living creatures of every kind on the earth.”
What I love about that scripture is that even today when GOD sees the rainbow HE is reminded of the covenant and of his mercy on his people. Rainbows are picture of His everlasting mercy and kindness to us… Plus rainbows are just so beautiful!
